How do I care for my palm trees during the summer months?

Summer is when your tropical palms truly thrive! Water every day to every other day, checking the soil moisture with your finger—if the top inch feels dry, it's time to water. Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom of the pot or for 20-30 seconds if planted in the ground. You don't need to add fertilizer since our soil contains slow-release Osmocote fertilizer that lasts the entire palm season. Ensure good drainage and monitor for yellowing fronds, which can indicate nutrient deficiencies. Most tropical palms love full sun to partial shade and high humidity. When is the best time to plant palm trees?

For tropical palms in the Northeast, late May through early June is ideal—once nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 60°F and all frost danger has passed. This gives your palms the entire summer growing season to establish and thrive. For cold-hardy palms that will stay outdoors year-round, spring (April-May) or early fall (September) are best, allowing roots to establish before winter or summer heat stress.

Will tropical palms survive the winter in New York and New Jersey?

No, most tropical palm varieties cannot survive northeastern winters outdoors. They typically thrive from May through October, then die off when temperatures drop. Many of our customers choose to treat them as seasonal plants—they enjoy the beautiful tropical look all summer, and then simply purchase new plants the following year. For most people, this is more practical than trying to bring large plants indoors for the winter. If you want a palm that stays outside year-round, Windmill palms are cold-hardy and can survive Zone 7 winters, though they grow slower and have a different look than tropical varieties.
